How to Calculate GST (Formula & Examples)

Goods and Services Tax can be computed depending on whether you wish to attach tax on top of a net product price or extract the base amount from an existing all-inclusive retail tag.

1. Formula for Adding GST (Exclusive of Tax)

If you have a base price and want to figure out the final price tag with tax, apply this calculation:

GST Amount = (Base Price × GST Value Percentage) / 100
Gross Total = Base Price + GST Amount

Example: If your service costs ₹10,000 and carries an 18% standard bracket, the tax equals ₹1,800, bringing the comprehensive total up to ₹11,800.

2. Formula for Removing GST (Inclusive of Tax)

If your product bill already contains tax and you need to isolate the pure base cost, use this math:

Pure Base Price = All-Inclusive Total Amount / (1 + (GST Value Percentage / 100))
GST Amount = All-Inclusive Total Amount – Pure Base Price

Example: If a consumer electronics piece retails for an all-inclusive price of ₹11,800 with an 18% built-in tariff, the actual machine asset is worth ₹10,000, and the embedded tax contribution is exactly ₹1,800.

What are CGST, SGST, and IGST?

Every calculated calculation splits your localized internal transactions right down the middle into two components:

  • CGST (Central GST): Collected by the Central Government on an intra-state business trade.
  • SGST (State GST): Collected by the State Government on an intra-state business trade.
  • Note: If you are moving items between two separate states entirely, a single consolidated IGST (Integrated GST) collection occurs instead of the individual split.
