How Sleep Cycles Work
Our sleep is not a uniform state of rest. Instead, your brain cycles through distinct phases every night. According to researchers at the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS), a single complete sleep cycle lasts roughly 90 minutes and consists of two main categories:
- Non-REM (NREM) Sleep: This transitions your brain from light sleep (Stages 1 and 2) into deep, restorative slow-wave sleep (Stage 3). Waking up during deep slow-wave sleep causes severe grogginess, biologically known as sleep inertia.

The 15-Minute Buffer
When tracking your schedule, you cannot simply calculate backward from your wake-up time based solely on 90-minute blocks. You have to account for sleep latency—the actual amount of time it takes for your body to transition from fully awake to asleep.
Clinical data from the American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM) indicates that a normal, healthy sleep latency window is between 15 to 20 minutes. If you fall asleep the absolute second your head hits the pillow, it is actually a primary medical sign of severe sleep deprivation.
